Introducing SURPAC Surveying Software
An Introduction to SURPAC Surveying Software
The origins of the software date back to the mid 1970’s when Keith Young was carrying out post-graduate studies at the Department of Surveying, University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
These studies involved investigating the optimization of computerized survey calculations, with the emphasis on the application of Least Squares adjustment techniques to large control surveys and to photogrammetric triangulation.
In the latter part of the 1970’s these techniques were successfully applied to a variety of desk top and hand held computing devices, then available on the market.
By the early 1980’s, It become obvious that, in South Africa in particular, Surveyors had a need for desk top computing facilities to enable them keep up with the ever growing world of electronic devices. To this end, SURPAC Software was first commercially marketed in 1982. At that stage, the entire SURPAC software suite was installed onto a 5″ floppy disk and ran on non-graphic, desk top computers using first generation, 8 bit processors.
Over the past 40 years, SURPAC Software has been continually expanded and improved. Faster and better computer processors, operating systems and programming languages have enabled SURPAC to grow into a comprehensive suite of applications, covering virtually all fields of survey computations and draughting.
Currently, SURPAC runs under the Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems.
To date over 10,000 SURPAC Modules have been sold.
